What to Expect During An SMP Procedure

So, you’re looking to book a scalp micropigmentation session and you’re excited but nervous about your first appointment. You’ve seen the results your friends and influencers have posted on social media and struggling with hair problems, you’ve decided to give it a try yourself!

It’s understandable why you’re nervous. But don’t worry; the procedure is simple and won’t cause any side effects.

But to ease your mind, we’ve written down everything you should expect from your first session. So let’s get started!

The Practitioner Will Discuss Your Options First

The practitioner will first take into account your preferences and medical history. Some people are not eligible for SMP procedures. These include people with:

  • Heart conditions

  • Diabetes

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Kidney problems

  • Liver problems

If you’re taking blood-thinning medication, you need to disclose this to your practitioner. Your practitioner will let you know whether or not you are eligible for SMP. You will also need to include your GP on-board.

If you do not have any illnesses and do not take medicine, then your practitioner will discuss styling options. You can choose the type of hairline you want and the style of the pigment.

It Will Take a Few Sessions

The first session will not be a session but it will be an appointment to discuss everything. After you have discussed everything with the practitioner, they will then call you in for your first session within a few days.

Scalp micropigmentation takes at least two sessions. This depends on the type of treatment you will need. If you have gotten hair transplant procedures done before and have scars, it will take an extra session to cover up the scars.

It Will Take At Least Two Weeks for Your Scalp to Heal

It will take at least two weeks for the results to show and during this time, you will need to follow the aftercare procedure properly. This means avoiding going out in the sun (you will need to wear a cap), working out (for at least two days), and getting the scalp wet.

The reason for this is that sweat and water can wash away the pigment. You need to give the pigment time to settle. The aftercare procedure needs to be followed for at least 10 days.

Your scalp during this time will be slightly red and itchy. The practitioner will provide you with a topical cream.
